French Beach Holidays - Where Should You Go?

By Mark Walters

For tourists, France has long been a desired holiday destination. From the Eiffel Tower to the sights and sounds of Paris itself, the European country has much to offer those seeking an escape from trials and tribulations back home. As wondrous as the culture and history are, France also lays claim to some of the most remarkable beach towns and resorts. If you are going to France to visit its beach towns and resorts, here are some of the best...

Sete is a fishing town found on along the Mediterranean Sea. Because the basis of this town's economy is seafood, the cuisine is unmatched. Many times, dinner is concocted from the catches of the day. In fact, bouillabaisse is the village's local specialty. It is a delicious fish and shellfish stew with origins as a quick lunch for workers made from leftovers. There is much to do for active tourists as well, because its beach front offers everything from scuba diving to sailing. For a touch of the exotic, there are even water jousting tournaments held in Sete.

St-Jean-de-Luz is a French beach town that acts as a port for a wide array of boats. When boats of all colors and sizes weigh anchor in the town, a vibrant snapshot of the region's culture appears. The downtown area features beautiful architecture and shopping centers. Because St-Jean-de-Luz is located in Basque Country and is nearby to Spain, all kinds of goods are offered to vacationing shoppers. This town is also known for its surfing, and even if you are a complete novice, there are several local shops that are happy to provide lessons.

No coverage of French beach towns and resorts would be complete without mentioning the French Riviera. Locally referred to as the Cote d'Azur, the resort is a popular holiday destination for tourists as well as the rich and famous. Some towns that you have certainly heard spoken of are Nice, Cannes (home to the famous film festival), and Saint Tropez. Nice in particular is considered the most affordable city in the region and is home to breathtaking architecture and plenty of art museums. Not only is the French Riviera littered with sparkling, sprawling beaches, the surrounding cliffs create scenery that only a few exclusive places on Earth can claim.

With its enviable position between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, France offers plenty of beach going vacations to virtually anyone. Its beach towns and resorts are built on local culture and economies immersed in history and culture. There is sure to be something that strikes at least someone's fancy in one of France's best beach towns and resorts.
