Choosing The Right Ski Resort

By Adriana Noton

Many people enjoy skiing during the wintertime. But there are many different types of ski resorts, with different appeals that some people will enjoy more than others. Choosing the right ski resort will make sure that you have a great time, while picking the wrong one might leave you less than thrilled.

Ski resorts have many different attributes to consider, including the size of the location, the number of lifts and runs that it has, the availability of rental equipment and the price, and the accommodations you will stay in to use the slopes. Making your own choice based on your personal preferences is usually the best way to go.

The size of the ski lodge is vital to the atmosphere. Large resorts are busy and hectic, which is an environment that some people thrive on. Smaller resorts can be nearly empty, especially during the week, which is equally appealing to some. Choosing the size of your resort is easy, with resorts coming in all sorts of sizes.

Differently sized resorts have different numbers of runs and lifts. Huge resorts can have dozens of lifts and hundreds of runs. This allows people to enjoy multiple runs of the same skill level, but these big resorts can be very crowded. Smaller places have fewer runs and fewer lifts, but they might actually be easier to use because they are less crowded. Small resorts often only have one or two runs for each beginner, intermediate and advanced, so pick a bigger locale if you are likely to be bored by this.

Rental equipment is more pricey at the slopes than if you rent it off-site. But the advantage to renting it at the slopes it that you usually have to pay for fewer days, and you don't have to lug it up to the slopes. Consider renting off-site if it isn't too much trouble to get the equipment to the slopes, and if you are going for longer than a few days.

The prestige and size of the lodge in question greatly influences prices. The bigger and more famous the resort, the more a lift ticket will cost, usually. This can be worth it, if you especially enjoy the particular lodge, or like the multiple runs available to you, but consider going to a smaller location if the prices at big ones are too high.

Picking out where you will stay while visiting the slopes is also an important part of enjoying yourself. Some resorts actually have accommodations on the slopes, where you can watch the other skiers from your window. This eliminates the requirement of driving to the resort from your accommodations, of course, but can deprive you of the wilderness experience that many people enjoy in farther-away cabins and lodges.

Taking the time to research the options and consider what you want from your trip will make sure that your experience is the best that it can be. There is a ski resort that is perfect for every skier, but you might have to search it out. Make sure that you find yours, and your perfect trip, by setting aside a little bit of time to locate it.
