Reducing financial problems when travelling

By Fred Taylor

Being late to a flight, losing your valuables, damages, sickness and even sustaining injuries Many things can go wrong while you are in transit so may getting an insurance policy is best ask you cannot change what has already happened but try to lessen the cost it will get you.

The vice president of the Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies said that most Americans only get health and accident policies, personal auto policies and homeowner or tenant insurance policies. Getting a homeowners policy will allow one to avail of about $1,000 of coverage away from home for losses through fire, theft and vandalism, and misplaced or lost property.

He also mentioned that there is a recovery rate of 10 percent for all the losses in the household. Say you have a household that with contents worth $50,000 only $5,000 is given back to you for the items that were stolen or damaged while you were away. $500 is the recovery limit for things like jewelry, furs, watches and cameras and such items as plane, bus and train tickets, and credit cards while for cash it is just around $100.

Per loss of credit card, it is stipulated by law that only $50 will be provided then again most people have more then one credit card hence receive more. It can be perilous to have too many cards with you or even money. There is sometimes a lag in the payment of the items you have lost with the homeowner type policies.

One can purchase a personal property floater in order to get more protected when it comes to more valuable items like jewels and the like. Getting this add one will allow you to say how much you want to be covered and at the same it does not have any deductibles, with rates ranging from $1 to about $3 per $100 of coverage.

Available also for protection against lost or damaged luggage are short term policies covering specific flights. Airlines and other public carriers will usually reimburse passengers for losses or damages but on a limited liability.

Around $750 per passenger on domestic flights and about $20 per kilo or 2.2 pounds for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage on international flights, including domestic portions is regularly the rate the airlines give their passengers. Air travelers can also get the short term accidental death policies. For this policy there are many benefits that one can take advantage of and at the same time it does not cost that much.

With just one swipe of your credit card after buying a play ticket you can take part in a$250,000 in accidental death insurance for $3. When you decide to cancel your trip you are actually incurring more cost and not getting anything back. The policy you may be getting will only cover air fare at most but if you are lucky it can cover the whole trip.

Normally getting Health and accident insurance policies will cover you both abroad and in the US. Only a few medical facilities in the United States require immediate payment from patients with identification card confirming their insurance is in force.

Most of the time hospitals abroad will require a person to immediately pay their bills even if they are already covered by insurance.

Getting reimbursement is possible if you have the necessary documents for it. If in case you do not have medical insurance you can get the short term policies that will allow you indemnity for illness or injury, typically about $30 per day. Any accidental injuries sustained while traveling will be covered by the trip accident policies which is another short term policy.
